The campus is a vibrant hub of activity, but it also produces large quantities of waste. The excellent housekeeping and facility management staff have ensured that this campus remains "Zero Garbage." Organic waste from both the kitchen and garden is collected separately and taken to the composting yard. On campus, composting sheds are attached to each utility, like the ones shown below:

Sridevi, from the Facility Management team, talks about their daily operations in the composting shed connected to Nikoo 2 apartment block. Each day, they collect three kinds of waste: wet, dry, and reject waste. Door-to-door collection is utilized in these apartment complexes. Flat owners are being made aware of segregation regulations via digital channels, and they are constantly reminded if there is any improper compliance.
They collect from whoever segregates. The contents of the household bins are transferred to their own bins. Large trolleys carry all the waste collected from each level of the building down to the basement, where it is then taken to the OWC area.
"Wet waste is brought to the composting area at our facility, where we record its weight and register it in our daily logbook. Then, we spread all food refuse onto the floor to sort out undesired components such as polythene bags, coconut shells, or items that are too wet, etc. We avoid too much wetness causing materials like sambhar (curries)", says Sridevi.
After separating out all non-compostable materials, dry compost is added to the food waste in order to absorb additional moisture. The correct quantity should be mixed to achieve the desired consistency. After all the ingredients are thoroughly blended, it is fed into the pulverizer for fine grinding. The final product is then divided equally into all the bins.
Compost is collected daily from the bottom. "The great thing about this machine is that it performs the work of 5 or 6 people. I'm so pleased with it, because it processes material into tiny pieces easily and effortlessly". Sridevi stated that this machine can provide the required grinding consistency for ideal composting.
After being processed, the dry compost is reground by this machine to get a powdered finish. "We are elated with the quality of compost that our efforts have yielded.
